Guitar Instruction

On this page: Technique, Performance, Benefits, Testimonials, FAQ

With the Childbloom approach to lessons, your child will have fun learning the guitar. Our small group classes of two to four students gives participants the opportunity for camaraderie and ensemble interaction, while also receiving individual attention and developing solo skills. The curriculum and teaching techniques we use have been developed specifically for working with young students. Parents are invited to be involved in the lessons and are given tools to be able to help with the learning process at home. We have a very high student retention rate because our students are given clear, consistent and achievalble goals for success.

Technique

Students are taught a fingerstyle approach to guitar that uses both left and right hands equally, as it is a style that does not limit their ability to improve. All our instructors are well-schooled in guitar technique, and are periodically reviewed to ensure that all students are exposed to a consistently high level instruction

Performance

Student recitals and concert events take place several times a year, giving your child the opportunity to perform in front of enthusiastic, supportive audiences. All performances are voluntary. In addition to recitals, student performance ensemble opportunities are available for motivated students. To view our upcoming performances, see our Events section.

"Childbloom has been wonderful for my daughter. She never felt like she could do anything well (like the older kids do), but now is eager to exhibit her skill. She learns without realizing it as her teacher challenges her to imitate him and they 'jam' together.” - Jolene Lockwood

"The Childbloom Program allows quick success, which encourages my daughter to play more, and raises her self esteem when she learns a new song. These lessons are adding a wonderful new facet to my child's life." - Donna Zwanzinger

"I like the fact that I am able to attend lessons with my child. I feel like I am more in touch with her through this activity" - Frank Marklin

FAQ

Q: Do you teach beginners?
A: Yes. Not only do we love to teach absolute beginners but we also teach at every level of ability.

Q: What size guitar should I get for my child?

A: It depends on your child's age and size. Generally children ages 5-7 are best suited with a 1/4 size guitar, ages 8-9 a 1/2 size, and ages 10-12 a 3/4 size. We can reccomend music stores that will be able to to help find the appropriate guitar.

Q: How long and how often are the lessons?
A: The lessons are a 1/2 hr. long and we meet once a week. We give lessons Monday-Friday from 10am until 8pm.

Q: How long does it take to learn the guitar?
A: Our goal is to have student making music from the first lesson. The Childbloom curriculum gives students appropriate and achievable challenges that help them develop the interest and self discipline to make guitar playing a lifelong activity. We reccommend that parents commit to a minimum of 2 months of lessons when starting a child with learning the guitar.

Q: As a parent, how can I best help my child’s musical ability?
A: Even if you don't have any musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply encouraging your child, showing interest in their playing, and helping develop the student's practice habits your child will improve. Parents are encouraged to attend their child's music lessons to get an idea of how songs should sound and what the student should be practicing.

Q: What is the class size of the Childbloom Guitar Program?
A: We are structured lessons in small groups of 2-4 students of the same age and ability level. This format allows for a low-pressure learning environment while giving room for individual attention. Using the small group approach allows us to introduce students to the experience of making music with others, and gives kids the support and cameraderie of learning along side peers.

Q: What are the biggest benefits of the Childbloom Progam?
A: Our instructors are trained to understand and appropriately work with the dynamics of a child's specific emotional, intellectual, and physical development level. The Childbloom curriculum and teaching techniques have been developed over the last 30 years using thorough research into child development theories and a central philosphy that children learn best through play. This solid foundation of training and tested teaching tools allows us to create a learning atmosphere in which students consistently experience success. We give parents tools to be involved directly in their child's learning process, which has proven instrumental in helping students make music an integral part of their lives. Our lessons are affordable, our location is convenient, and we offer lesson scheduling with the needs of busy families as the priorty!
